With 2020 proving to be an unprecedented year for live events, it was a significant moment when Silverstone were given the go ahead to start running Motorsport events. As one of only handful of significant sporting events allowed to happen, there were many aspects that needed to be considered to ensure it ran smoothly, respecting all of the rules. An important and yet largely hidden aspect was how to get Marshals back on-site with the minimum of physical gathering. Traditionally, they would have gone through a process of briefings and training on site and all together, but this was just simply not allowed this year.
To avoid the usual physical interaction, much of the process of managing this large bank of people was now converted to online. This involved an app, QR codes and scanners.

As a result of this new app based approach, physical contact was kept to a minimum and paperwork eliminated. In fact, an added side benefit was the Silverstone team no longer had to manually scan all of the physical sign on sheets on the Monday morning, following a busy weekend of delivering a world class motor racing experience.
